(KPL) Representatives of the Department of Industry and Handicrafts under the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, the World Wide Fund (WWF) Laos and the Responsible Asia Forestry and Trade (RAFT3) met in Vientiane on Aug 8 to discuss the model development of sustainable wood processing and raw material supply chain. The meeting was also attended by Deputy Minister of Industry and Commerce Phanthong Phitthoumma, and President of the Lao Furniture Industry Group Thongsavanh Soulignamat. “The model development of sustainable wood processing and raw material support chain aims to find solutions to problems related to stranded timbers and the prevention of the export of logs, timber, and promote vocational skills development, value creation of Lao wood products as well as the optimal utilization of wood resources in line with Prime Minister’s Order No. 15,” said Deputy Minister Phanthong. The model development of sustainable wood processing and raw material supply chain project also aims to promote anti-deforestation efforts in the country by encouraging local people to grow industrial trees for commercial purposes and job creation. “This model project is in line with the government policy on the promotion of collective-based production in the timber industry. It promotes the cooperation among wood processing entrepreneurs and facilitate producers’ access to timber markets and vocational skills development in line with the government policy,” said Mr Phanthong.
